Generalized Conjunction and Relational Nouns

چکیده
Generalized conjunction and relational nouns. I will analyze the behavior of relational nouns in conjoined contexts. In most of the examples I address the coordination of nominal categories. ◊ Some of the cases such as husband and wife are problematic for the current theories of conjunction (Winter 2001, Heycock&Zamparelli 2005) ◊ I will analyze those and highlight some connections to the analysis of plural relational nouns like sisters

Context Sensitivity of Relational Nouns
We present findings that relational nouns are more contextsensitive than entity nouns in two conceptual combination recognition tasks. Across two experiments, we investigated people’s ability to recognize entity nouns and relational nouns either in the same context as at encoding or in a different context. We found that (1) participants showed greater recognition sensitivity for entity nouns th...
متن کاملRelational Nouns as Anaphors
This paper examines the syntactic and semantic properties of a set of nouns recently called "Relational Nouns" like mother, neighbor, etc. Relational nouns denote relations between individuals, rather than sets of individuals regular nouns denote, and are referentially dependent on individual-denoting expressions. In Japanese relational nouns may appear 'bare' with no genitive possessors in the...
متن کاملCan Relationality be Distinguished from Abstractness in Noun Mutability?
Previous studies have suggested that relational concepts are more mutable—more prone to change meaning in context— than entity concepts even when both relational and entity concepts are denoted by nouns (Asmuth & Gentner, 2005; Feist & Férez, 2007). However, relationality is a complex dimension, and is highly correlated with other factors such as imageability and abstractness. In the current re...
متن کاملAn Extended Algebra for Constraint
| Constraint relational databases use constraints to both model and query data. A constraint relation contains a nite set of generalized tuples. Each generalized tuple is represented by a conjunction of constraints on a given logical theory and, depending on the logical theory and the speciic conjunction of constraints, it may possibly represent an in-nite set of relational tuples. For their ch...
متن کاملRunning head: RELATIONAL CATEGORIES ARE MORE MUTABLE 1 Relational Categories Are More Mutable than Entity Categories
Across three experiments, we explore differences between relational categories—whose members share common relational patterns—and entity categories, whose members share common intrinsic properties. Specifically, we test the claim that relational concepts are more semantically mutable in context, and therefore less stable in memory, than entity concepts. We compared memory for entity nouns and r...
